Eighteenth Century elm dough bin blanket chest
I just love this. This is an eighteenth Century dough bin, dating to around 1750. Originally it would have been used to store flour on one side and for making and proving dough in the other. It is made in solid elm and I don't think you will see a vernacular period piece in such good condition.
The coffer has a leather strap hinge, (some replacement leather). It has planked sides with exposed dovetails to the corners and stands on baluster and block legs with moulded stretchers. The base attached with pegged joints to the trough.
This is a beautiful piece. The elm has the patina of age you would want to see. It is a lovely colour. There has been minor worm in the stand which you would expect to see in something this age but the worm is remarkably light and long since dead.
This trough is a real talking point and could be used as a blanket chest. It will look wonderful alongside period antique furniture in a cottage setting or in a barn conversion or hall where you require scale.
The coffer is 57 inches wide and 30 inches high and 19 inches deep.
