Edwardian Silver Plate Tea Set, Frank Cobb & Co
Here we have an unusual and very stylish Edwardian Silver Plate 3 Piece Tea Set. The set comprises a teapot of flattened spherical form alongside a matching cream jug and sugar bowl with gilded interiors. All three pieces have engraving all across their bodies of twisting stems festooned with flowers or possibly seed pods. The cartouches on all three pieces are blank.
The tea set is made in Sheffield by Frank Cobb & Co and dates to around the Edwardian era between the founding of the firm and the start of the First World War. Frank Cobb founded his company in 1903 moving to the Howard Works in Sheffield a couple of years later. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and quickly became successful. When other firms were struggling in the late 1920s and 1930s, Cobb was prospering and acquired a number of companies and their premises. Frank Cobb died in 1957 but the firm continued to thrive until it finally closed its doors in 1986.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just a small amount of wear to the plate on the handle of the teapot, obviously the most used part of the set. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot is 25.7cm / 10.1ins from spout to handle, 13cm / 5.1ins across the body and 13cm / 5.1ins high. The cream jug is 11cm / 4.3ins from lip to handle, 7.5cm / 2.9ins across the body and 12cm / 4.7ins high. The sugar bowl is 15.5cm / 6.1ins from handle to handle, 10.5cm / 4.1ins across the body and 8.5cm / 3.3ins high. The set of three pieces together weighs in at 1.132kg / 39.9oz.
The undersides of all three pieces are marked FC & Co for Frank Cobb & Co with the teapot also having an S for Sheffield and an EP for silver plate.
