Edwardian 15ct Gold Cuff Links, GH Jonstone, 1905
Here we have a fine quality, elegant set of Edwardian 15ct Gold Cuff Links. The cuff links are chain linked ovals with a chased floral design on the front of each plate. The cufflinks come supplied in a period box from jewellers F. Barrett & Co of Grafton Street, Dublin.
15ct Gold was a legal standard in the UK between 1854 and 1932, although it was very little used after the First World War, when the US 14ct standard became widely adopted internationally.
The cuff links were made in Birmingham by Jeweller G.H. Jonstone & Co and date to 1905. Founded by George Hope Johnstone in around 1876, the firm operated from premises in Northampton Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. Their distinctive monogram mark is most commonly seen on cuff links in either gold or silver although they did produce other items. Johnstone died in 1907 but the company remained in business until around the mid-1920s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings, dents or damage, just the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each cuff link is 1.7cm by 1.1cm and each pair is 1.8cm long. The set weighs in at a very respectable 4.6g of solid 15ct gold.
The backs of the cuff links are fully hallmarked and the marks are well struck and clear to read. They show the 15 and .625 stamps for 15ct gold, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter f for 1905 and the GJ monogram mark for G.H. Jonstone & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cuff links.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
