Edward Hurst 1912-1972 USA Oil Canvas Amaryllis
We are pleased to offer for sale this stunning still life oil painting on canvas by the American artist Edward Hurst, who has signed the painting to the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts two Amaryllis blooms against a dark background. The amaryllis of the genus hippeastrum, is a beautiful, large flower that sometimes has multiple flowers on one stalk and grows from a large bulbe, most commonly indoors in time for Christmas. The ones depicted are called 'Merry Christmas'. They can also be grown outdoors in warmer climes.
Edward Harrison Hurst Jr. was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1912, the son of an insurance agent. He studied in New York at the Art Students League and with George Luks. He also studied in Europe at the Florence Academy and in Munich at eh School of Moritz Hegman. He is best known for his society portraits and his still life paitings. He lived variously in Knoxville, New York and London.
He appeared in 3 US Censuses in 1920, 1930 and 1940, when he was listed as living with his widowed father in Knoxville and being a free lance artist. However, he had already visited London, where he had been staying at the Stafford Hotel, St. James' Place, SW!, because that was the address he gave when embarking on the S. S. Highland Brigade bound for Buenos Aires, in 1937. However there is an article in The Sphere in 1939 showing a portrait by Edward Hurst and the statement that he is making a big name for himself in the field of portraiture.
In the newspaper archives, we found that paintings of his were picked for the exhibition of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in both 1955 and 1957 and in The Sketch in 1950, there was a photo of him sketching a Mayfair milliner. He must also have used pastels as a medium, as there were two pastel portraits by Edward Hurst in the Pastel Society exhibition in 1963. In several of these articles it gave his address as 25 Eaton Square, London SW1, which is where he died on 17th October 1972. It seems that latterly, he was living full time in London, as there are no other records available in the US after 1940.
His work periodically comes to the market, although very few of the portraits, mostly still life watercolours of flowers at which he was very skilled.
The painting is framed in what we think is its original gilt frame with wide black velvet insert and gilt slip, which suits the painting very well. The four sections of the frame have Ed Hurst written on each of them in pencil, probably by the framer after the lengths had been cut, which leads us to believe that the frame was the original chosen by the artist. It will be supplied with new brass hangers, new brass picture wire and will be ready to hang.
Image size: 15 3/4 x 10 3/8 inches - 40cm x 26.25cm
Frame size: 21 1/4 x 15 7/8 inches - 54xm x 40.25cm
Medium: Oils on canvas
Condition: Very good. There is no craquelure, stretcher marks or paint loss. There is a slight score mark to the canvas from the back bu the mark is barely visible when hung. The frame and slip are also in very good condition.
