Edna Best Signed Geometric Bowl for Lawleys
I have seen many Edna Best shapes and designs but this is the first bowl I have come across. The Edna Best pottery story is an interesting one.
In the 1930's Lawleys of London wanted their own range of pottery wares to compete with the popular Clarice Cliff. To add importance to the range which was produced by Pearl Pottery Burslem, they reached an agreement with stage and screen star Edna Best to include her signature on the base of each piece. The story that follows is a little sketchy and unsubstantiated, but allegedly Colley Shorter (Clarice Cliffs husband) who owned the Newport Pottery factory producing Clarice Cliff wares, was so incensed at the blant copying of his Stamford range, he purchased and destroyed as many Edna Best pieces as he could obtain. The result is that there is very little Edna Best pottery on the market today.
