A rare hand painted art deco jug signed 'Edna Best' Art Pottery. Made exclusively for Lawley's department store by Pearl Pottery. 5.5 inches (14cm) high. In good, used vintage condition with no chips or cracks. There are several tiny paint scratches all over so please take a close look at the photos. These pieces were entirely hand painted and prone to ageing and under glaze marks from firing.
In the 1930's Lawleys of London wanted their own range of pottery wares to compete with the popular Clarice Cliff designs. To add importance to the range which was produced by Pearl Pottery Burslem, they reached an agreement with Hollywood stage and screen star Edna Best to include her signature on the base of each piece.
