Early Large Primitive Pine Coffer Folk Chest Box
A Large and Highly Impressive Antique Pine Coffer
A truly lovely example of a rustic pine coffer, dating to around the early 18th century (c.1710) and continental in origin.
The front panel is chip-carved with a charming, folk art design depicting a central vase with flowers, flanked by large, geometric flower heads, radiating 6 petals.
The chest has been constructed in the country style, from large planks of roughly sawn pine, with exposed jointing at the corners. Incredibly rustic! Most unusually the top is still attached to the base using the original stapled hinge mechanism - often these break and are replaced with horrible modern hinges you would see on a door. Not so here.
This is a large and striking chest and would make a wonderful decorator's piece and would look perfectly at home in a country property (it had previously been used in an open hallway / porch in which to store walking boots and shoes), or it could fit equally well into a town house....bringing a bit of rural charm into the city.
Dimensions -
160cms wide x 55 cms deep (from the back board to the leading edge of the foot) x 59 cms high.
Condition -
In heavily used, antique condition, with extensive surface wear and marking.
Some small losses - particularly to the lower lip on the sides and to the upper edges of the lid.
The lid has a couple areas of repair in places - pieces cut away and replaced - see just behind the central latch and also to the far right hand side edge.
The feet and their cross supports to each side are likely later additions (but certainly not 'new'). They have been strengthened into place with the addition of two screws, very discreetly done.
Internally the candle box to the right has a little movement and a repair. The folding cover to the candle box operates but sometimes detaches.
The leading thin edge / lip to the lid is original but had splintered away, so this has been carefully reattached.
The whole piece has been polished / waxed as shown.
Some old / minor and inactive worm holes evident to the vast back plank / panel.
Side batons to the lid are vintage / old replacements.
Despite the extensive wear and use, it is a solid piece and able to go straight into service.
