Early 20thC Canadian Red Ensign Flag Mounted Flag
The supple cotton Canadian red ensign featuring the Union Flag in the canton, defaced with the shield of the Coat of Arms of Canada, the whole showing a lovely consistent gentle fade across the fabric, mounted on a long smooth wooden pole surmounted by a painted silver finial, survives from the first quarter of the twentieth century.
There is some light fraying to the edges of the fabric and some light discoloration to the colours with one striped area of fade, but generally the flag and the pole are in super condition.
During the time of the British Empire the dominions, many of the colonies, protectorates, mandates, and other territories carried their own flags, mostly under the blue ensign although some territories and colonies did also use red ensigns for their flags. This example bears the second design for the Canadian red ensign, the first was used from 1868 before the design was standardised in 1921, dating this flag to just after that period. This version of the Canadian Red Ensign was used between 1921 and 1957. The only change from the previous was making the maple leaves green from red.
A super antique flag from a bygone era.
