Early 20th C. Silver Plate 3 Piece Serving Set
This is a fine quality cased Early 20th Century Silver Plate 3 Piece Serving Set. The set consists of a flate bladed knife, a four pronged fork and a broad bowl spoon. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set was made in Sheffield by Frank Cobb & Co and dates to around the 1920s/30s. The inside of the box has the retailer's mark for David Henderson of Aberdeen. Frank Cobb founded his company in 1903 moving to the Howard Works in Sheffield a couple of years later. The firm were both silversmiths and electroplaters and quickly became successful. When other firms were struggling in the late 1920s and 1930s, Cobb was prospering and acquired a number of companies and their premises. Frank Cobb died in 1957 but the firm continued to thrive until it finally closed its doors in 1986.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no plate loss and the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The box is also in very good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The knife is 26.7cm / 10.5ins long, the fork is 20.8cm / 8.2ins long and the spoon is 22.9cm / 9ins long. The set of three together, uncased, weighs in at 272g / 9.6oz.
The underside of each piece is stamped E P N S for silver plate and F.C & Co. S for Frank Cobb & Co of Sheffield. They are also stamped with a registered design number of 666965, which shows that the original design was registered in 1919.
