Early 18th.c. Carved Oak Mule Chest dated 1702.
Beautiful early 18th.c. oak mule chest or coffer with drawers from North Cheshire or Lancashire c.1702. Good sized box with a flat (rather than panelled) lid and two useful drawers in the base. Fabulous and original carved front with naive foliate detail carved in relief across the panels and frame. With the initials MC and dated 1702 at the centre of the the top rail, note also the lovely detail around key hole to look like an applied escutcheon. Unusual cushion moulded drawer fronts with small brass knobs. Oak panelled sides and back. Excellent condition with some earlier restorations, retaining the original long stiles front and rear. Particularly good colour and patina, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
