Early 18th Century Pollard Burr Oak Side Table

A wonderful early 18th Century Pollard/Burr Oak Side Table, the moulded oblong single piece burr oak top above a full length scratch moulded frieze containing a full width drawer, fitted with brass drop handles, raised on turned legs united by stretchers and terminating in ball feet.
This piece has the most exceptional colour and grain.
Circa 1710
H 27.5" 69.9cm W 36" 91.5cm D23.5 " 59.7cm
Note: Burr Oak is most certainly the most sought after of all the varieties and cuts of Oak which were available. A burr is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on the tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds and it does have a spectacular effect. Pieces made of solid burr oak are extremely rare and to find a single piece measuring three feet wide by two feet deep is virtually unheard of. Just imagine if you will the size of the outgrowth that this must have come from and then try to estimate the size of the mighty oak tree this must have been to support a growth of this size!
