We are offering for sale this lovely miniature portrait on ivorine, by the artist Dorothy Mary Venning. The miniature is unsigned but was part of a parcel of work by this artist purchased at auction. The miniature depicts a Classical Lady, wearing a grey silk gown with full sleeves and a bead necklace, who has her dark hair parted in the middle and has a flower in her hair.

Dorothy Mary Venning, was a London miniaturist and sculptress, who was born in 1885. She exhibited between 1916 and 1936 and showed 12 works at The Royal Academy. She may have been a relative of Sydney J. Venning, a London figure painter and Virginia M. Venning, another sculptress, who lived in Hertfordshire. Other than this, we can offer little further biographical information.

She is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club). We can find no recent auction results for work which obviously does not come to the market frequently.
