Derby Plate - Earl of Camden Dinner Service c1795
For sale we have a dessert plate decorated by William Billingsley with sprays of roses to the centre surrounded be an apple green ground. The pattern is lllustrated in “William Billingsley” by WD John.
The plate measuring 9.5 inches in diameter was part of a dinner service ordered by Lady Camden on the 11th of April 1795 for delivery on the 4th of June 1795. Unfortunately and much to the annoyance of Lady Camden the dinner service was not delivered on time.
Lady Camden was the wife of John Jeffreys-Pratt (1759-1840 son of Judge Jeffreys) who become the 2nd Earl of Camden in April 1794 and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in March 1795.
John Twitchett described the dinner service as being the finest example of William Bilingsley’s work. See “Derby Porcelain” by John Twitchett
This rare example from the Earl of Camden dinner service is in a very good antique condition, with no chips, cracks or repairs, however, there is some wear to the gilt.
This plate is currently being exhibited as part of the selling exhibition of rare Derby, Pinxton, Nantgarw and Swansea porcelain "A journey with William Billingsley" 2016, ISBN: 9783741809903.
