Col.M.Sarram b.1929 Iran W/colour Mosque Esfahan
This is a wonderfully detailed and very large watercolour of part of the interior of the Masjed Shah Mosque, which is located on the south side of the Maydan Shah (now Maydan Khomeini) Square, in Esfahan (a.k.a. Isfahan), Iran. The watercolour was painted by the Iranian artist Colonel M. Sarram, who has signed it in the lower left hand corner. He has captured the intricate patterns of the mosaics covering the walls and arches in great detail and the work must have been very time consuming. There are many photographs of the interior of this mosque on google images.
Colonel Manoochehr (now Mark) Sarram, was born in Esfahan in 1929. He started painting at the age of 11 and has continued throughout his life. After military academy he served in the Imperial Iranian Army, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1979, the same year that the Shah went into exile in Egypt. Since 1979 he travelled extensively to many countries of the world and on a visit to the USA, he very much admired the scenery of Arizona and settled in Phoenix and later Scottsdale. He painted many watercolours of its colourful and dramatic scenery.
His earlier works depicted the mosques and monuments, including churches, of his native city of Esfahan. His work has been exhibited in the USA in Oregon, Washington D.C. and New York.
In 2009, he published a book entitled 'Persian Painting at its Best. The Life and Work of Colonel M. Sarram.' In this book is another painting of this mosque, painted from a different angle.
The painting is double mounted in two tone mountboard and is framed in a 1 3/4" gilt frame. The back of the painting bears a label from an Art Gallery in Dubai, as well as a label giving the location. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
