Cmdr. Eric E.C.Tufnell Watercolour HMS Repulse
We are offering for sale this excellent watercolour by the celebrated nautical artist Commander Eric Erskine Campbell Tufnell, who has signed the painting E. Tufnell in the lower right hand corner and inscribed it H.M.S. Repulse Dec. 10th 1941 in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts the events of that date, when the Repulse and the Prince of Wales were sunk by the Japanese, the Repulse receiving three simultaneous torpedoes, two on the port side and one on the starboard, after being moderately damaged by Japanese bombers. She sank shortly after, followed in half an hour by the Prince of Wales. The painting shows, in the top right hand corner, the badge of the Repulse.
H.M.S. Repulse was a Renown Class battlecruiser of 26.500 tons. She was built on Clydebank, Scotland and was completed in 1916. She joined the Grand Fleet and served in the North Sea for the rest of WWI. She had an extensive refit in 1922 and another in 1933-36, including a hanger and catapult for aircraft. She operated with the Home Fleet in the North Sea and Atlantic during the first two years of WWII, taking part in the pursuit of the Bismark. Later in 1941 she was sent to the Far East with the new battleship Prince of Wales, where, when returning to Singapore, on 10th December 1941, the events depicted above took place.
Commander Eric Tufnell was born on 9th September 1888 at Bangalore in India. Joined H.M.S. Brittania as a cadet in 1903 and went to sea asa midshipman in 1904. Served in submarines 1909-1917 and then in anti-submarine work until 1919. He commanded several small ships in the Eastern Mediterranean and served in the Fleet Air Arm 1926-30. In 1938 he was recalled to the Navy for meteorological work in Colombo and left Ceylon in 1942, soon after the Japanese attack. Took up an apointment to the Naval Information Services, where he served until his retirement in 1946.
Although he received no formal art training, his knowledge of the seas and skies proved of great help to him in his painting. His watercolours have often been on show at the Parker Gallery in London. He lived in Farnham, Surrey, where he died on the 18th July 1979 aged 91. He was a very prolific artist. (This biography courtesy of The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters).
A fuller and more personal biography of his life may be found on google at holywellhousepublishing.
The painting has been newly double mounted to complement and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" silver gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
