Chinoiserie Red Lacquered Bureau Bookcase 1920s
This is a very attractive narrow Chinoiserie decorated on a red background bureau bookcase made in England in the 1920s.
The tall bookcase section with its broken swan-neck pediment comprises two glazed doors with pagoda-shaped glazing bars which open with a key to reveal three adjustable shelves.
The bureau section comprises a fall which opens to reveal a tooled leather writing surface, five small drawers and three open compartments, below which are three long drawers, all standing on bracket feet.
The exterior surfaces are decorated with Chinoiserie scenes of people in a landscape containing rocks, trees, plants, birds and butterflies.
The bookcase provides plenty of display space for those well-loved books while the bureau has abundant storage for all sorts of things which are better hidden away. It would look stunning on a narrow wall, perhaps at the end of a corridor, where a wider piece of antique furniture couldn't be accommodated.
Dimensions: Height 7 ft 8 1/2 inch
Width 30 inch
Depth 18 1/2 inch
Condition: The bureau bookcase is in good antique condition. There is a repaired split in the apron of the bureau section, it lacks a key for the fall and the brass handles, though in keeping with the piece, are later. The bookcase section rests on the base without screws but has two brass mirror plates behind the pediment for attaching to the wall. Please contact David if you would like to see some additional photographs by filling in an enquiry form or calling 07931 370 372.
Delivery: Delivery using our preferred delivery service is £100 to all of mainland England and most of Wales. If you live in North Wales or Scotland please contact us for quote.
