Chinese monochrome Gu altar vase – Guangxu
Chinese monochrome porcelain Gu cobalt altar vase - believed to be Guangxu. It has exceedingly fine coloration – handsome, deep sacrificial blue. A hand potted porcelain beaker, Gu form, strong and tasteful with a rounded central body, flaring to the everted rim. The rich blue glaze thins to white at the rim, the interior is further glazed white.
Sacrificial blue glazed porcelain is found on the market rarely as Chinese collectors and museums have purchased many of the available pieces. The colour became popular from the early Ming period onwards, when the Hongwu emperor decreed that ceramic wares should be used at the official sacrifices at the Imperial altars and blue was the prescribed colour for ritual vessels at Tiantan (Temple of Heaven).
Height 27 cm, diameter of top rim 12.5 cm
