Chinese Finely Carved Camphor Wood Chest, c.1920
This is an exceptional Chinese carved camphor wood chest standing on bracket feet, circa 1920s, in superb antique condition with a lovely colour. The quality and intricacy of the carving on the top and front panels is of the highest order. The top depicts a river scene with two junks and a rowing boat with a pagoda and conifer trees lining the banks, all within a wide floral and butterfly carved border. The scene is repeated on the front panel with small variations due to the hand carved nature. The back and narrow sides are also well carved albeit less deeply.
The lid lifts on two cup handles or the engraved brass hasp to reveal a nicely figured, naturally coloured camphor wood interior. The lid is held upright on a metal stay. Another attractive and relatively rare feature of this chest is the rounded sides at both ends.
Dimensions: Width 97 cm x Depth 48 cm x Height 54 cm
Condition: This chest is in fine antique condition having been cleaned and waxed in our workshop. There is a lovely tonal variation with higher relief areas being lighter in colour than the lower relief parts of the carving. The top sits flush on the base. The chest retains its original Chinese brass padlock. Additional photographs are available on request.
Delivery: This chest can be delivered by our trusted delivery man to most places in England and Wales for £60. Please contact us to confirm the delivery cost.
