Charles McArthur 19thC W/Colour L/scape
This listing is a very finely detailed watercolour by the Victorian artist CHARLES M. MCARTHUR, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1873. The painting depicts a landscape scene with a distant town. There is a figure on a track, either shooting birds, or waving a stick, possibly at the two travellers, who are cooking something over a fire to the left of the painting, beneath a clump of trees. There are several dead trees on the banks on either side of the track. This painting is one of a pair by this artist that we are currently listing.
CHARLES M. MCARTHUR, who was active between 1860 until at least 1880, was a Nottingham artist, who lived partly in London, but lived in Ilkley between 1882 and 1892. He painted landscapes in both oil and watercolours. His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood,The Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu and Painters in the Northern Counties of England and Wales by Dennis Child.
His London exhibitions feature in Graves Dictionary, where he exhibited 2 paintings at the Royal Academy and four at Suffolk Street. He also exhibited in the North of England. Examples of his work may be found at Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery and Accrington Museum.
