Charles Gibbs 1834-1910 Landscape Oil Surrey Hills Charles Gibbs 1834-1910 English %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer this lovely oil on canvas by the artist CHARLES GIBBS, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner C. Gibbs, with his standard monogrammatic signature with the C reversed over the G. The painting depicts a panoramic view of the Surrey countryside, we believe from one of the three Surrey Hills, Box Hill, Holmbury Hill or Leith Hill. There is a man leaning on a walking stick talking to another man, who is leading a grey donkey, with a woman seated sideways on the donkey. The artist has mastered the art of distance in this painting.

CHARLES GIBBS, who was born in 1834 in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, was an artist of landscapes in oils, mainly views on the River Mole and Ouse and other Surrey landscapes. He was living in South Street, then Falkland Road, Dorking, Surrey from at least 1881 until after the census of 1901, but according to ArtUK.org, he died in 1910, although we cannot find a registration of his death. We have been unable to trace any further biographical information about him, apart from the fact that he never married, but he exhibited 12 times at The Royal Academy, including 'An Old Water-Mill near Shere, Surrey' and 'Evening in the Wood, Dorking' between 1878 and 1899. He also exhibited 23 works at Suffolk Street 1877-1894 and in the provinces.

He also exhibited 15 paintings at the Royal Society of British Artists, 7 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute, 13 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, 4 at the Manchester City Art Gallery, 3 at the Birmingham City Art Gallery and 3 at the Royal Hibernian Academy.

He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists and The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood. Auction records for works by this artist may be found at artprice.com, askart.com, artnet.com, arcadja.com and findartinfo.com.

A painting of Abinger Mill, Abinger, Surrey may be found in the Dorking Museum and Heritage Centre and is shown on ArtUK.org in the National Collection.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/8" ornate, swept gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
