Charles E. Hannaford RBA Watercolour Off Eddystone Charles E Hannaford RBA Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a fine watercolour by the artist Charles Edward Hannaford RBA, who has signed the painting with his customary surname only, HANNAFORD, in the lower left hand corner. The painting was entitled 'Squally weather off the Eddystone on part of the old gilt mount, which was kept with the painting, when it was remounted in 1992. It is not attached to the frame, but will be supplied with it. The painting depicts a yacht heeling over before the wind near the remains of a partly submerged wreck close to the latest and fourth Eddystone lighthouse, with the stump of the previous tower showing above the water to its left. The rocks that the lighthouse is built on are in Devon. The current Eddystone was designed by James Douglass, started in 1879, the lamp was lit in 1882 and the lighthouse was automated in 1982, the first in Britain. The tower now has a helipad on top of the lantern to allow maintenance crews access.

Charles Edward Hannaford was born in Liverpool in 1863. He was educated in Paris but at the age of 17 he was articled to the Borough Engineer of Plymouth. In 1883 he was elected to the Institute of Civil Engineers, after which he turn to architecture, practising in S. Wales, but he gave up his career to paint full time. He studied art under Stanhope Forbes from 1899. He was known principally for landscapes and marines in watercolours.

He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1916. He exhibited 1 painting at the ~Royal Academy, 2 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, 83 at the RBA, 1 at the Royal Cambrian Academy, 1 at Manchester City AG and 120 at the Walker Gallery. He had two 1 man exhibitions at the Walker Gallery in 1910 and 1912. He was much patronised by the Royal Family and one of his miniature watercolours hangs in the Queen's Doll's House.

His biographical details are listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of Britist Watercolour Artists by Mallalieu and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters. He married firstly Helen nee Lean (1862-1931) in 1886 in Cornwall, with whom he had two sons, Charles Arthur, who, after a career in banking became an artist and Leonard Gordon. He married Margery Winifred nee Wright (1894-1977) in 1932. He lived and submitted his work from various places including Plymouth, Swansea, Devon, East Grinstead, London, and finally Norfolk, where he died on 21st October, 1955.

The painting is framed with wash lines and a gilt insert and has been newly framed in a 1 3/8" gilt frame. I will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
