C. Hindley & Sons Walnut Open Bookcase
A good quality Victorian period open walnut bookcase from the renown workshops of Charles Hindley and Sons of 134 Oxford Street, London ( impressed stamp to bottom shelf). The top having a thumb moulded edge above the shaped frieze which has applied decorative carving and rounded corners. The stiles with wonderful turned and spiral carved columns leading to the shaped plinth and turned bun feet. The interior having 2. adjustable shelves with attractive carved detail. The whole in very good original condition, fully cleaned & waxed. Dimensions:- Height…36’’/ 91.5cm. Width…48’’/ 122cm. Depth…12’’/ 30.5cm. Delivery to most of U.K. mainland £55.
C.Hindley and Sons were based at 154 Oxford Street, London, from circa 1820-1830 and are recorded in the V&A archives. Henry Miles and John Edwards were based at 134 Oxford St. London from 1822 till 1844 and appeared in directories in 1823 and 1835-39. The firm had many prestigious patrons including the Empress of Russia. In 1844 Miles and Edwards were taken over by Charles Hindley and Sons. Several account books, journals, stock lists and letter books of Miles & Edwards survive, dating 1825-44. Both companies are listed in the Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840 by the Furniture History Society.
