C19th Ebonised Bonheur-du-Jour Writing Desk
This lovely writing desk dates from the mid-nineteenth century. It is of lovely quality and has painted porcelain plaques inset into the drawer fronts, featuring Grand Tour style scenes. Each plaque is signed A. Roland. The desk has an ebonised finish over a wooden carcass. It has a lift-off top section at the back which has an open section over a drawer. There is a pull-out writing slide beneath the top with a single drawer beneath. The piece is supported on turned and reeded legs terminating in small turned feet. There are no maker's marks. The drawers retain the locks, but the keys present do not work the locks (but are needed for opening the drawers. The pull-out slide retains a small brass handle.
Condition: Overall this handsome piece is in good usuable condition with some wear consistent with age and use. There is some scuffing and wear to the painted finish as might be expected, and the plaques are a little grubby. The velvet writing surface inset into the slide is worn with loss and staining and is lifting at the sides. The lower drawer is missing its escutcheon and the keys do not work the locks.
The approx measurements are as follows:
104cm high, 77.5cm wide, 51.5cm deep (to maximums). Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
