C.1880 John Roby LTD ships window

1 of 6
We are delighted to offer for sale this super rare and highly collectable, totally original John Roby LTD Rainhill stamped ships porthole window with the original glass
Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide and covers London only, for the rest of the world it covers local Europe, if you are outside of these areas please ask for a quote before you bid
In the late 1850's, John Roby, a brass founder and copper smith, set up a brass foundry on the west side of Mellings foundry in Rainhill, to make brass fittings for ships. By 1861 he was employing twelve men and five boys and had already built Roby's Cottages alongside his works to house his workmen - probably the first industrial housing in Rainhill. The Foundry later became Thomas Utley (Rainhill) Ltd., and continued to make port lights, windows, bells and other ships' equipment from brass.
This is a rare find, usually the external cover has been removed and lost or the glass broken, this is 100% complete and original
My plan was to use it as a kind of cool bathroom window, but we went in another direction in the end
If the new owner wishes they can polish this to a gold finish, I have left it as it is, it’s taken well over 100 years to develop this patina, it would be a crime to remove that honest age
The glass is blue, its locked in place with two large bolts which move freely, the outer cover plate also moves easily however the fixing bolt is very stiff, the whole piece maybe weighs 50-60kgs, its very heavy
The condition is 100% period perfect
