British Empire Exhibition Souvenir Vase, 1924
This is a lovely little blue ceramic vase from the famous British Empire Exhibition of 1924. Vast numbers of souvenirs were produced and sold at the exhibition but many have long since disappeared and pieces related to the event are widely and enthusiastically collected.
The British Empire Exhibition at Wembley was opened by HM King George V on 23rd April 1924 and initially ran for 6 months. Towards the end it was decided that a second season from April to October 1925 would be added. At the time it was the largest exhibition ever staged anywhere in the world. The ongoing legacy of the exhibition is Wembley Football Stadium, the original having been built for the exhibition and replaced by the current stadium in 2007.
This stylish little vase is octagonal shape and designed to suggest a pillar, in keeping with the design of many of the pavilions at the exhibition. It stands 13cm / 5" high with a diameter of 3.6cm / 3" across the base. It is printed on the front with the Wembley lion and the wording "A Present from British Empire Exhibition Wembley 1924".
Condition is good with no chips or cracks, although it has clearly had some use.
This is by no means a piece of high end ceramic art. At the time it was a mass produced piece designed to be a souvenir item. What it remains is a small piece of the history of a monumental event, which has survived in remarkably good condition for 96 years.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
