Bloor Derby Kemeys-Tynte Armorial Plate c1820 Kemeys-Tynte Arorial plate Regency armorial
We have for sale a very attractive armorial Bloor Derby dinner plate form the sought after Kemeys-Tynte service c1820.

This lovely Bloor Derby armorial plate consists of gilt rim around a wide cobalt blue border decorated with a foliate gilt foliate design around the large and rather complex Kemeys-Tynte coat of arms. The plate was commissioned for the Marriage of Charles Kemeys - Tynte to Elizabeth Swinnerton in 1820.

The Kemeys Tynte armorials are depicted with the Swinnerton armorials in escutcheon.

In the first quarter, the Kemeys Tynte armorials are displayed: the heraldic badges for Tynte in quarters 1 and 4, (gules, a lion couchant between six crosses crosslet arg) with the Kemeys arms in quarters 2 and 3 (vert on a chev ar three pheons sable).

In the second quarter, the Halsewell heraldic badge is shown: azure, three bars wavy argent over all a bend gules. This represents the marriage of John Tynte and Jane Halsewell.

In the third quarter, the Wharton heraldic badge is shown: sable, a maunch argent, on a border or, an orle of lions gambs erased in saltire gules. This reflects the marriage of Charles Kemys 3rd Baron Kemys who married Mary Wharton (1649 - 1699) the daughter of Philip 4th Baron Wharton and Jane Goodwin.

In the fourth quarter, the heraldic badge is gu, three lions passant, arg. which could be for Gifford, potentially the Gifford family of Burstall, but the connection is unclear. On other versions of this family's armorial, this fourth quarter depicts the heraldic badge for Lupus earl of Chester azure a wolf's head erased arg.

The Swinnerton armorial contains the heraldic badge for Swinnerton in the 1st and 4th quarter, arg a cross-formée flory sa.

The armorial for Abnet is shown in the 2nd quarter gu an eagle displayed between 2 pheons arg. This refers to the marriage of Elizabeth's grandparents, Mary Abnet and Thomas Swinnerton.

The armorial for the Herbert earls of Pembroke is shown in 3rd quarter: per pale az and gu, three lions rampant arg. Elizabeth's mother was Mary Milbourne, and her connection to this family is likely to be through Mary's great-grandparents George Milbourne and Christian Herbert

The plate is 10 inches (25.4cm) in diameter and other than the craquelure typical of Bloor Derby is in a good to very good condition but has a small crack to the foot, some loss to the gilding of the rim and some staining. The base of the plate caries a Duesbury II Mark to base.
