Bible Cover once owned by Mary Queen of Scots
This unique bible cover, reputedly owned by Mary Stuart and given, by her mother, to Lady Elizabeth Stuart, later Countess of Arundel and Surrey. The bible cover is finely worked in coloured threads and raised stump work, depicting the Crucifixion inside a geometric border.
The bible cover passed from the Countess of Arundel to her son, Charles Howard of Greystoke, where it has been on display along with a facsimile copy of the Warrant, signed by Elizabeth I, ordering Mary Queen of Scots' execution. It remained at Greystoke Castle, Penrith for many generations, before being sold at auction in 2021, where we were able to purchase it in Cumbria.
Mary Stuart's execution was carried out in the Great Hall of Fotheringham Castle, Oundle, Northamptonshire, on 8th February 1588, having been found guilty of treason on 25th October 1587. She was eventually interred at Westminster Abbey, by her son,( James I of England and James VI of Scotland).
