Bernard Leach St.Ives Studio Pottery Slipware Jug Bernard Leach Shoji Hamada Lucy Rie %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
A Very Early and Rare St. Ives Pottery Slipware Milk or Cream Jug.

Thrown in earthenware, this characterful jug is covered in a rich amber-chocolate glaze which displays slight metallic inclusions. Faint slip painted details are visible to the underside of the spout, to each side.

This piece bears a crisply impressed St.Ives seal mark to the base together with a curious painted mark (a triangle containing a dot). I am uncertain of this second mark but it could be a symbol Bernard Leach used as code for certain glazes or techniques, or, perhaps specific positioning within the kiln.

This jug is strongly attributable to Bernard Leach and I am selling it as such. The specific design of the impressed seal on this piece was in use between 1920 and 1923, whilst Shoji Hamada worked alongside Leach in St.Ives. The shape of this pot also references the angled or 'barrel' shaped pots Hamada made whilst at St.Ives at that time.

A fully signed Bernard Leach cup and saucer (with an identical, distinctive handle design to the one on this jug) is discussed at considerable length on the Victoria and Albert website. Please see "Ceramic Points of View: 'Cup and Saucer', by Bernard Leach".

In very good and acceptable condition for age. Some glaze fritting to the rim and a star-shaped firing split to the base.

A historic piece and a first-rate addition to an early St.Ives pottery collection.
