Bernard Leach St.Ives Pottery Stoneware Brush Pot
A LEACH POTTERY BRUSH POT
A beautiful brush pot or small vase, of cylindrical form, made at the historic Leach Pottery in St.Ives Cornwall.
The body, thrown from stoneware, is covered with a pale oatmeal type glaze, with a fabulous painted and banded design in rich iron, grey and smokey blues.
L for Leach. L for Liberty.
The unusual, repetitive motif can be read as a stylised 'L', (perhaps denoting 'Leach')....or perhaps more likely 'LIBERTY'..........for a small vase, with the same motif, see 'Bernard Leach, Hamada and their Circle, from the Wingfield Digby Collection', p.30. That vase, made for the Bernard Leach Exhibition at Liberty's in London, dates the present example to around the 1956. It is very likely this brush pot was also originally retailed at Liberty's.
11cms high x 9cms wide
The piece bears a crisply impressed St.Ives (old style) seal to the base as shown and, owing to the specific design and quality of the brushwork, is strongly attributable to Bernard Leach himself.
Bernard Leach (1887 - 1979) is widely considered the father of the British Studio Ceramic movement and the most influential artist-potter of the 20th Century.
