B. D. Sigmund 1857-1947 Watercolour dated 1880

We are delighted to offer for sale this wonderful, large watercolour by the celebrated artist Benjamin D. Sigmund, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1880. The painting depicts a beech wood, with a very old, gnarled beech tree in the centre foreground, which has split in half. One of the halves is still standing and bearing leaves, although it is covered in moss. As the artist lived for a while in Burnham and has painted Burnham Beeches in the past, it is probable that this is the location, which has been a favourite location for many artists.
Benjamin D. Sigmund, 1857-1947, was a genre and landscape painter, principally in watercolours and mostly 'plein air'. He was born in St. Pancras, London in 1857, and, according to census records, lived in various parts of the home counties and Devon, prior to his death in Barnstaple, Devon in 1947 at the age of 90. Although he exhibited widely, mainly between 1880 and 1904, little is known about his life.
He exhibited 31 paintings at the Royal Academy, 25 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 34 at the RI, 17 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, etc. Between 1880 and 1893, he exhibited 85 paintings at London Exhibitions, according to Grays Dictionary, which terminated in 1893. He was a prolific artist and there are 114 auction listings at artnet, 134 at artprice, 59 at findartinfo and 48 at arcadja. There are many examples of his work available for viewing at the above sites and on google images. His works achieve high prices.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 3/8" ornate bronze frame to suit. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
