Augustus J.C.Hare 1834-03 W/Colour Colosseum
We are delighted to offer this very well executed watercolour which we are attributing to the Victorian artist AUGUSTUS JOHN CUTHBERT HARE. The painting is unsigned, which is not unusual for this artist, but it has been inscribed on the reverse in pencil 'Augustus Hare born 1834 died 1903. We have checked his work and it bears all the hallmarks of this artist. His colour palette, the detail and execution and the fact that he painted a similar view of the Colosseum, but from a slightly different angle and from a great distance. Often his watercolours bore a label on the back of the frame, giving the location etc. but as we purchased this painting unframed, if there had been a label, it vanished with the frame.
AUGUSTUS JOHN CUTHBERT HARE, was born in Rome on the 13th March, 1834. He was adopted by his widowed aunt and was devoted to her. He spent his childhood in Hurstmonceaux in Sussex, went to Harrow for l year, left due to ill health, but obtained his BA from Oxford in 1853. He spent a year in Italy from 1857-58 and wrote his first guide book when he returned. He travelled extensively in Europe, visiting many countries, including France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Denmark etc.
He was a writer, raconteur, illustrator and talented watercolourist. He wrote travel books, for example, Walks in Rome, Wandering in Spain etc. and illustrated them with his drawings and paintings. He also wrote biographies of famous people connected with his family and an autobiography, with ran to several volumes. For a greater biography, there is one on wikipedia and on the Augustus Hare Society website.
He died on 22nd January 1903 and is buried in the churchyard of All Saints Parish Church in Hurstmonceaux.
