Arts & Crafts Stool by Simpsons of Kendal. c.1910.
Delightful little English Arts and Crafts stool by the celebrated Cumbrian designer and craftsman Arthur Simpson of Kendal c.1910. Oak frame on short chamfered and tapering legs with original plaited leather seat of dished or concave shape reminiscent of the famous Liberty & Co. Thebes stool. With serial number and ‘Arthur W. Simpson Handicrafts Kendal’ maker’s label to the underside. Excellent condition.
Arthur Simpson (1857 – 1922), having served as an apprentice at Gillows in Lancaster, returned to his native Kedal to open his first workshop in 1881. Whilst undertaking several ecclesiatical commissions he also produced a range of smaller domestic antique furniture of traditional form and in 1889 had his first piece accepted into the Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition. Following this his work followed a more deliberate Arts & Crafts direction, perhaps under the influence of his close friend the great Arts & Crafts architect C.F.A. Voysey. Voysey designed a house in Kendal for Simpson who in turn exectuted several furniture commisssions for Voysey. Simpson’s best work is celebrated for the purity of its forms and the quality of its materials and manufacture.
