Arts & Crafts Liberty & Co Chest


An Arts & Crafts oak chest of drawers by Edwin T. Hall and Edwin S. Hall for Liberty & Co c.1924. Later white marble top over two over two drawersl drawers, each with distinctive wrought iron drop handles. Panelled sides and exposed pegged construction. The two lower drawers have extending drawer runners which allow the drawers to be fully opened without droping.
Provinance Made circa 1924 for Liberty & Co's magnificent Tudor building on Great Marlborough Street. Designed by Edwin Thomas Hall and his son Edwin Stanley Hall and constructed from the timbers of two men-of-war battleships HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan. The chest is part of a range of antique furniture made for the rooms and galleries to display the textiles, clothes and luxury goods the shop was so famous for. All were made in the sixteenth century style, with pegged construction and decorative details complementing the design details of the building. All the furniture was made in the firm's workshops in Highgate and demonstrate the same high levels of craftsmanship and attention to detail as the building itself.
