Arts & Crafts Inlaid Oak Dining Table & 6 Leaves
A rare Arts & Crafts inlaid Gothic Revival 18 1/2ft wind-out extending dining table, probably designed by Charles Bevan and made by Gillows of Lancaster. In quarter-sawn oak and with seven leaves, this large 5ft wide table smoothly extends from 6ft 6.5in to 18ft5 by means of a double Joseph Fitter ‘screw expander’ mechanism allowing it to seat up to 18-20 people. The rounded rectangular top with a double thumb moulded edge and plain frieze below. Standing on four substantial square tapering legs with canted corners and inlaid flower motif to the top, each leg further inlaid to every side with dots and rings and finished with geometric channelling, on octagonal feet similarly inlaid with a band of dots and with sunken concealed castors.
Sympathetically cleaned and polished using traditional hand methods, with striking ‘tiger grain’ pattern from the medullary rays, some marks, wear & fading consistent with age. Winder handle is included. Would also make a fantastic boardroom or conference table.
Extended Length - 18ft 5 / 221in (561cm)
Closed Length - 6ft 6.5in / 78.5in (199.5cm)
Width - 5ft / 60in (152.5cm)
Height - 30.25in (77cm)
Legroom - 23.75in (60.5cm) under frieze, 28.5in (72.5cm) under leaves
If extra legroom is required a set of wooden castor cup risers can be purchased separately.
Leaves
24.25in (61.5cm)
24in (61cm), x3
23 7/8in (60.6cm)
22.75in (57.7cm)
The presence on this table of typically Bevan motifs such as the bold lines and dot-inlay would suggest he was the designer, it is know that Gillows employed Charles Bevan to design antique furniture in the "Geometric Gothic" taste.
