Arthur Friedenson Runswick Sketch (1872-1955) oil
This painting of Daffodils is typical of the work of Friedenson. He always worked outside. This oil on board sketch was purchased from the artist's studio after his death. It is signed and inscribed on the reverse.
Arthur A. Friedenson was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on the 15th February, 1872. His father, Jacob Wolf Friedenson, emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1881 with his wife and five children. They settled in Leeds where two further children were born.
Arthur started his art studies, and his progress was rapid. At the age of seventeen, his first painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy.
In 1890 he decided to study on the Continent and on his return he started painting at Staithes and Runswick Bay. He married the daughter of the Principal of the Harrogate School of Art.
Friedenson moved south in 1909, living at Andover before moving to Wareham and eventually to Corfe Castle in 1929.
The south Dorset countryside became his regular haunt. A colleague wrote, “The day had been wet but in the evening the sun broke through and the sky contained massive cumulus clouds. The lighting effect was brilliant and dramatic – this was what had brought Friedenson out. He took a brush and without any fluster he put stroke after stroke on that board until the complexity and subtlety of the scene was recorded. He never hesitated. Every stroke was decisive and final. The light changed, the clouds reformed and he closed his paint box. I knew that I had seen a genius at work.”
Friedenson exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy and other major venues. For more information or pictures, or to make an appointment, please email or phone.
