Art Nouveau Jug by Eliza Simmance for Doulton 1910
Here we have a beautiful Art Nouveau Jug of unusual form. The jug has a round foot, a bulbous body and a cutaway rim to form the lip. The body is decorated with vine leaves and grapes on a pale pink central band with a darker pink ground above and below.
The jug is signed by Eliza Simmance, one of the finest of the decorative artists working from Royal Doulton's Lambeth works. Eliza joined the company in 1873 and remained with them until 1928. She started with heavier style Victorian pieces, moved onto graceful Art Nouveau pieces and finished in the early days of Art Deco design. She won many awards at international exhibitions.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips, cracks or damage. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is of considerable size, standing 22.4cm / 8.8ins high and being 17.5cm / 6.9ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs 1.76kg / 62oz.
The underside of the base has the Royal Doulton mark with the crown and lion above, awarded to the company in 1901. It has a date letter k for 1910, the distinctive E S monogram for Eliza Simmance together with the hk for Ethel Hawkins and fh for Florence Hunt, two of Eliza Simmance's regular assistants.
Shipping in the UK is £22 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
