Art Nouveau Jug by Eliza Simmance for Doulton 1909
Here we have a beautiful and distinctive Art Nouveau Jug. The jug has a round foot, a bulbous body, a raised neck and a lobed rim to either side of the lip. The body is decorated with vine leaves and grapes on a rich blue and brown background.
The jug is signed by Eliza Simmance, one of the finest of the decorative artists working from Royal Doulton's Lambeth works. Eliza joined the company in 1873 and remained with them until 1928. She started with heavier style Victorian pieces, moved onto graceful Art Nouveau pieces and finished in the early days of Art Deco design. She won many awards at international exhibitions.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips, cracks or damage. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is of a good size, standing 23cm / 9ins high and being 14.2cm / 5.6ins in diameter at its widest point. It weighs 1.27kg / 44.8oz.
The underside of the base has the Royal Doulton mark with the crown and lion above, awarded to the company in 1901. It has a date letter j for 1909, the distinctive E S monogram for Eliza Simmance together with the FJ for Florrie Jones and F for Catherine Francis, two of Eliza Simmance's regular assistants.
Shipping in the UK is £16 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the jug.
