This is a quintessentially Art Deco set of 6 silver plated grapefruit spoons and specialist grapefruit knife in their original box from the 1930s.

In times past there was a passion for creating specialist spoons and implements for every different type of food. Many were largely unnecessary but grapefruit knives and spoons do genuinely make segmenting and eating a fresh grapefruit considerably easier.

The six spoons have sharply pointed bowls and curved stems ending in a classic "Odeon" style Art Deco finial. The knife has a stainless steel blade, with the typical curving end for segmenting and an "ivorine" handle.

There is no maker's name on any of the pieces. The spoons are all stamped EPNS in gothic lettering on the underside of the stems and the knife is etched with Grape Fruit Knife and stainless on the blade.

Condition of the spoons and knife is very good with no dings, dents or plate loss and only the superficial wear you would expect after 80 to 90 years. The box is a little scuffed and the silk lining has a few marks and some fraying where the tip of the grapefruit knife catches it but the clasps are working and it shuts securely. The spoons are each 14.3cm long, the knife is 19.5cm long and the set (unboxed) weighs 163g.
