Artist Biography
Joy Barnes was born in 1912, daughter of the eminent psychologist Professor Spearman. She studied at the Chelsea School of Art under Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland. She continued her studies in Munich focusing on commercial art. In 1936 she started working for Service Advertising Agency producing advertising art work for many high end retailers and manufacturers. After the war she moved to Somerset and founded the Burton Art Society. Joy is still alive and painting today aged 100.
Painting Details
This is an original advert design for an education poster, probably for a government campaign. The painting is an intricate use of watercolour and bodycolour some used as spray paint. It is an exceptionally strong art deco image.
