Art Deco Male Figure 'The Archer'
Hes quite a large sculpture over 61cms in length 55 cm high and weighs 13.6 ks/ 30lbs and on a solid marble base, so very heavy! Ideal for mantlepiece or sideboard area. The sculpture is Emile Joseph Nestor Carlier ( 1849 -1927).
About the Artist:-
Emile Joseph Nestor Carlier (1849-1927) was born in France at Cambrai. He studied at local art schools before moving to Paris where he was a pupil of Jouffroy, Cavelier and Chapu at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He received many medals for his work and held the rank of ‘Officier’ in the Legion of Honour. This is a quality piece by Carlier, which uses bronze-patinated metal mounted upon a black marble base. Carlier, sculptured this incredible study during the early 1920s and no later than 1924. He was unarguably one of the leading exponents of his era, and his male sculptures in particular are considered by many to be the best from the period, as I would also tend to agree…
He had an amazing eye for detail whilst he captured his sculptured figures, all of which display an incredible sense of movement and naturalistic pose. It is thought that he and Salvatore Melani (1902-1934) quite possibly drew influence from each other’s works, in friendly but direct competition, and they may have even used the same life-models to produce their own interpretations of ‘athletic’ postured studies of the male figure, and here is one of the finest.
