19th century French terracotta sculpture God Pan
Great French sculpture from the second half of the 19th century. Polychrome terracotta work depicting a mythological subject, the bust of the God Pan, of great quality and personality with an almost grotesque character. Non-Olympian deity with the appearance of a satyr or faun represents the force of nature. The word panic then derives from its name, since if it was disturbed it emitted terrifying screams causing uncontrolled fear. Difficult to find statue in beautiful patina, for antique dealers, interior designers and collectors of ancient sculptures. Finely detailed down to the smallest details, note the flute with which he is often represented tied to Pan's neck. This instrument takes the name of Syringa because according to the myth the nymph Syringa, fleeing from the God eager to possess her, reached a watercourse. Unable to escape, she invoked the Naiads (water nymphs) who transformed her into a bundle of marsh reeds which emitted a delicate sound when the wind blew. Pan then decided to build a new musical instrument which he named after the Nymph. It is in good condition, structurally sound, with some small signs of aging.
