Art Deco Kingfisher Jug, Burleigh Ware, c.1930s Art Deco Thirties Ceramic %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a very striking Art Deco Ceramic Jug with a Kingfisher dramatically swooping off the handle and onto the body to seize a fish in its beak. This jug design was produced uncoloured and then passed over to the pottery's artists to decorate by hand and you will find them in a variety of colour combinations, every one unique. This particular artist has gone for quite natural colours with striking blues and reds on the kingfisher, green foliage, purple irises and a yellowy-green background.

The jug works equally well as a pitcher for drinks, for a good quantity of custard when required or as a vase for cut flowers.

The jug was made by Burgess & Leigh Ltd as part of their Burleigh Ware range at Burslem in Staffordshire at the heart of The Potteries. Founded by Frederick Burgess and William Leigh in 1862, they commissioned the building of the famous Middleport Pottery and moved in to those premises in 1888. This has since become the home for the TV series The Great Pottery Throw Down and also featured in Peakly Blinders. The company ceased trading in 1999.

Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks and no crazing to the glaze which retains its vibrant colours. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The jug is 16.5cm / 6.5ins from lip to handle, 11.7cm / 4.6ins across and stands 19.2cm / 7.5ins high. It weighs in at 600g / 21.2oz.

The underside of the base has the classic Burleigh Ware beehive stamp with the flowers on either side showing that it dates to the 1930s.
