Art Deco Gentleman’s Wardrobe by Compactom Ltd

A stunning early 20th century original gentleman’s ‘YN’ model mahogany wardrobe by Compactom Ltd of London dating to circa 1930. This iconic British made and designed wardrobe is in good condition with original fittings and labels to the drawers and compartments. With patented radial fan hanging rail, a variety of glass fronted cupboards and shelves and further shelves and hanging rails to the doors, a cupboard within the base cleverly provides storage for shoes and there is even a small holder for pomander at the top of the left door. A label to the reverse gives instructions on how the wardrobe can be dismantled should that be required for moving.
Externally it features an Art Deco stepped oak cornice and plinth with the simple design enhanced by beautifully selected mahogany veneers and crossbanding. In good structural condition it has a flat matt finish, there are some minor marks and signs of wear as should be expected for the age.
Compactom Ltd were ingenious in their designs of what they called ‘Clothing Cabinets’ and registered many patents, trademarks and designs to protect their innovative work. Contemporary adverts show they also worked with agents throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland who would showcase models in their windows.
