Art Deco Bretby Blue/Green Drip Glaze Vase c.1920s
This is a very striking Art Deco Bretby Art Pottery vase from around the 1920s. The vase is part of Bretby's Clanta range. Bretby Art Pottery was the commercial name of Tooth & Co, a company set up in Derbyshire by Henry Tooth and William Ault in 1883 after their departure from Linthorpe Pottery, where they had been close associates of Dr Christopher Dresser. Although this vase is from quite some time after Dresser's death, his influence is clear in its design, particularly with the four handles.
Clanta was the name given to Bretby's more costly hand thrown art pottery ranges, to distinguish them from the mass manufactured everyday wares that they also produced.
This is a very distinctive vase with a dimpled body, four handles at the shoulders and raised beads around the neck. It is decorated using the drip glaze method, which was done by hand making every piece unique. The dominant colour is blue but there are also greens, creams, yellows and browns in the mix. It is a truly beautiful piece and would look stunning in any modern setting despite being nearly 100 years old.
Condition is extremely good with no chips, cracks or any other sort of damage. It sets securely on a flat surface and is watertight, so can be used either as a practical vase or simply as a decorative piece. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 22cm / 8.5" high.
The marks on the base of the vase show the well known Bretby mark with the sunrise above the name. The uppermost mark is the word Clanta but this doesn't show very well. Below this is Made In England and then the pattern number 2343E, which dates the design of the vase to 1924.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post. Please be assured that the vase will be safely and securely packed for transit.
Overseas customers please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
