Antique Staffordshire Pottery Figure

A charming antique Staffordshire pottery figure group depicting a man and woman in a traditional pastoral setting, modelled beside a tree-form spill vase.
The gentleman stands in period dress holding a satchel while the seated lady wears a bonnet and flowing dress, both hand painted in rich tones of cobalt blue, green and ochre. The tree behind forms a spill vase, originally designed to hold thin wooden spills used for lighting candles or fires, combining both decorative and practical use.
The group includes a moulded milestone inscribed “London 30 miles”, a typical decorative feature seen on Staffordshire figures, intended to evoke a sense of travel and rural life rather than reference a precise location.
The reverse is finished in the traditional flatback manner, designed to sit against a wall or on a mantelpiece. Staffordshire figures such as this were highly popular in Victorian homes and were used as decorative ornaments that brought character, colour and storytelling to the interior.
A classic and collectable example with strong colour and good presence.
