Antique silver Zenith Land & Water trench watch
Antique silver Zenith Land & Water trench watch.
The watch has a high grade Swiss movement which is working nicely. The Zenith serial number 2217754 dates it back to 1918.
The watch measures 35mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the fixed wire lugs. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the case back for Glasgow (import mark), 1916 together with a mark for the Zenith Watch Company. There is some marking to the back of the watch but overall the condition is very acceptable for a 1918 piece.
The inside of the case back also has the serial number 2998576 which ties up with the number on the threaded section surrounding the movement, 576.
The Land & Water came in two forms, one with a screw back and the other with a Borgel style case, as we have here, in an early attempt at water proofing watches.
The watch glass has some marking, almost like a bloom, from where a lens sticker has been adhered for a long period of time but it only shows at certain angles.
The majority of Zenith watches were sold through an international network of distributors but this particular model, the Land & Water, was only available for purchase at the high end London jewellers, Birch & Gaydon of Fenchurch Street, a prestigious jeweller which ranked alongside Aspreys and Mappin & Webb.
The dial has the Birch & Gaydon name and address on the dial. There is some damage towards the edge of the dial between 10 and 11.
The watch has a very old strap, probably not the original... if preferred, we can supply a new leather strap.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
Please contact us before placing international orders so that we can advise of shipping prices and to see if customs regulations allow us to post watches to your country.
The international buyer is responsible for paying any import duties and taxes.
All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.
We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.
Credit / debit card purchases can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the \'Buy Securely\' button on each listing page.
We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
