Antique Quality Chippendale Mahogany Side Table

An outstanding Chippendale period mahogany tilt-top tripod table dating to circa 1770 exhibiting the refined proportions, exceptional craftsmanship and elegant detailing associated with Thomas Chippendale and his contemporaries.
The circular top is beautifully carved with a finely shaped scalloped edge — a sophisticated variation on the classic pie-crust form favoured in Chippendale’s Director designs. The quality of the carving, the sharpness of the shaping, and the finesse of the mahogany strongly indicate true 18th-century workshop craftsmanship rather than later interpretation.
The turned central column is superbly executed incorporating a crisply carved spiral-twist section above moulded turnings all set over a well-balanced tripod base. The cabriole legs flow elegantly into pad feet with excellent definition showing the confident controlled carving characteristic of Chippendale-period cabinetmaking.
The table retains its original tilt mechanism and block, and the mahogany has developed a deep, glowing patina that only nearly 250 years of careful handling can produce.
Condition
Excellent period condition with expected wear and patination for its age. Original tilt mechanism functioning smoothly. Structurally sound with superb colour and surface quality.
