Antique Naive Painting. Oil on Canvas. Circa 1890

![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
Folk Art. Naive School.
Oil on Canvas. 19th Century Circa 1890
Signed indistinctly: J D Blints ?
French, Belgian or French Canadian
Dimensions Framed: 61.5 cm x 51 cm
This is a charming and historically fascinating portrayal of a village scene towards the end of the 19th Century. It features street sellers and a 2 wheeled dog cart with brass canisters of milk being checked by a milk inspector. (See more information below)
The confident brush strokes and use of colour, (see the details of the dogs for example), demonstrate well the artists ability and skills.
The playful naive style is shown by the distorted perspective and the 2 dimensional characters in the scene. I love the way the road takes off in to the sky in the distance.
Condition: Very good. One very small worn area lower right with old patch repair (See photo 9 and rear legs of dark dog in detail photo 3)
Original stretchered frame and steel nailed canvas.
Period Birds eye maple frame and gilt slip.
Draught dogs were often used for pulling carts in the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century.
Bernese mountain dogs seemed to have been a popular breed for this work, though other breeds were also used, to transport items such as milk and cheese particularly in France, Belgium, Holland and also in Quebec Canada. They were also employed by the military in the first world war.
The practice was outlawed in most countries because of cruelty by some of the dog owners
Photographs often show milk carried in large brass canisters, some being checked by milk inspectors as in the painting. (see photo) ALL OF OUR ITEMS INCLUDE FREE UK MAINLAND DELIVERY.
