Antique Mahogany Extending Dining Table & Leaf Holder
A super late Victorian/Edwardian Scottish 12ft wind-out mahogany and inlaid Sheraton style extending dining table and leaf holder by James Garvie & Sons of Aberdeen. The dining table with rounded rectangular top with a moulded edge and standing on four square tapering legs with boxwood line inlay and spade feet, with original brass caps and brown pottery castors. The table smoothly extends from 5ft 5in to just under 12ft by means of a Joseph Fitter winding mechanism allowing it to seat up to 14 people. A fifth leg to the centre provides additional support and any combination of leaves can be used. With a good colour and grain it has been recently polished and waxed by hand using traditional materials and is ready for immediate use.
The matching bowfront leaf holder provides useful storage for the table leaves whilst not in use and also functions as a serving table or sideboard. With rope-twist inlay to the top and frieze and further inlaid with shell and fan motifs within borders of boxwood stringing and satinwood crossbanding, it has a door to each end to allow the leaves to be easily inserted.
The original set of 12 chairs from this table (as shown in some of the photographs) are available separately at the time of listing..
