Antique Glazed Bookcase, English, Walnut, C.1910
This is an antique glazed bookcase. An English, walnut library cabinet, dating to the Edwardian period, circa 1910.
Established during the Industrial Revolution as the communal church for newly built merchants houses, St. Stephen's of Westbourne Park in London was erected after 1855 as part of the 'For Building and Promoting the Building of Additional Churches in Populous Parishes' Act of Parliament. Built in the gothic style, the church has withstood many renovations and aesthetic changes in its time, including the removal of its spire after WWII left it unstable and a thorough overhaul to battle subsidence in the last decade.
Superb cabinetry with a wonderful personalised plate adding to the appeal
Displays a desirable aged patina and in very good order
Select walnut stocks present fine grain interest
24 pane glazing in very good condition, with bright appearance
Arranged as a two door and single door cabinet of three shelves each
Wide cavetto crown accentuated with quality dentil moulding
Canted corners hosting Greek influenced reeding
Both doors dressed with inset, brass lined locks — keys present
Fan shaped corners to the glazing an eye-catching quartered finish
Each of the shelves can be removed or arranged through a range of 64cm (25.25")
Interior hosts an engraved presentation plaque to a vicar, gifted in April 1913
The whole standing upon a deep plinth foot, open to the panelled rear
